The Mercedes C63 AMG Black Series is an even more extreme version of the company’s high-performance Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe.
Mercedes has made aerodynamic upgrades and fitted race-specification suspension, and the 6.2-litre V8 engine has been tuned to produce 510bhp – 59bhp more than you get in the standard C63, 29 more than Development pack cars, and 53 horses down on the SLS. The engine now redlines at 7200 rpm, a 400-rpm jump from that of the regular C63. Torque rises slightly, from 443 to 457 lb-ft, although peak grunt still arrives at 5000 rpm.
While there is plenty of news under the bonnet, and we'll get to that in a minute, it's the car's brakes and chassis that are the real standout features. Brakes are now some huge carbon efforts which are both hugely powerful and full of feel. The brake rotors grow just over an inch front and rear. Perfect in other words. Forged 19-inch, nine-inch-wide alloys sit inside fattened front fenders; the rear rollers live beneath gargantuan flares and are another half-inch wider. Front track is 1.6 inches greater than on a standard C63, and rear track blossoms by 3.1 inches. Stiffened springs, fatter anti-roll bars, and adjustable spring perches are mated to two-way adjustable dampers on the Mercedes C63 AMG.
Mercedes-Benz announced that for the 2012 DTM season, it is retiring the C63 AMG sedan safety car it fielded last year—and replacing it with a C63 AMG Coupe Black Series.
As such, not much was required in the C63’s transformation from road-legal race car to track-ready safety car. The biggest visual difference between the ultra-rare street Black Series and the safety version is a roof-mounted light bar.
