A 1966 Mercedes Fintail ( Heckflosse ) and a Classic VW Beach Buggy were collected from locations within the UK and delivered to Southampton docks for shipment to Singapore this week.

The cars will be lashed inside a container to keep the vehicles in an enclosed and secure environment, unable to move freely before the container is carefully deposited aboard a container ship destined for Singapore.

Classic Car Transport - a 1966 Mercedes Fintail (Heckflosse)

First seen in 1959, the new Fintail range of Mercedes-Benz saloons replaced the now dated lines of the previous Ponton range with a new squared-off shape that was lower, wider and drew its nickname from the American influenced wings at the rear.

The 4 door Heckflosse models were produced from 1959 until 1968.  They were known to the public as 190, 190D, 220, 220S, 220SE, 300 SE and 300SE LWB (Long Wheel Base), after 1965 they were replaced by the 200, 200D, 230 and 230S. The 220 SE was replaced by the 250SE (W108), the 300 SE and SE LWB by the new W108 and W109 300 models.

The 2 door models were produced from 1961 until 1971, these are also called W111 and W112 by Mercedes-Benz. They were known to the public as 220SE, 250SE,300 SE, 280SE and 280SE 3,5 Coupé and Convertible.

Cars in the Fintail (Heckflosse) range were also known as Mercedes-Benz W111, which was a chassis code given to the Heckflosse range of Mercedes' vehicles produced between 1959 and 1971, including 4-door sedans (1959-1968) and 2-door coupes and cabriolets (1961 to 1971).

With the 230 only sold between 1965 and 1968, survivors are now becoming hard to find - particularly in good working condition.  The range initially consisted of six-cylinder (W111) models only but from 1961, these were joined by the four-cylinder (W110) and flagship 300SE (W112) models. In 1965, Stuttgart completely revised the model range, replacing the 220 with the 230, essentially a six-cylinder version of the W110 model and thus retaining the round headlamps previously found exclusively on the four-cylinder cars.

The M180 overhead camshaft engine developed 105bhp with twin downdraught Solex carburettors and was available with either four-speed manual or the optional automatic transmissions. With all the traditional Mercedes-Benz virtues like solid engineering, excellent build quality, advanced safety features and mechanical reliability, the Finnies, as they are affectionately known, were an inexpensive, practical classic saloon and much sought after.

Beach Buggy History

The Beach Buggy was first conceived by a Mr. Bruce Meyers in California, in the early 60`s, having grown up surrounded by Surfing, Drag Racing and hanging out on the beach.  The first Meyers Manx was pieced together by Bruce Meyers in a shed in Newport Beach sometime in 1964. His aim was to create a simple vehicle for blasting around the sand dunes. He and his friends quickly discovered that chunky 4 wheel drive jeeps didn't fare nearly as well as lightweight VW Beetles in the dunes.

While he wasn't the first to create a VW-based dune buggy, his sleek vehicle took full advantage of the fiberglass molding skill he'd picked up while working at Jensen Marine.  The VW Beetle ( also known as the VW Cabriolet ) ( Cabrio, Type 1 Cabrio (T1) has become an iconic vehicle worldwide and has formed the car beneath the exterior of the Beach Buddy for thousands of Beach Buggy Kit builders.

It is known by numerous names. In Germany it’s a Kafer, in the USA a Bug or salon, and in England a Beetle. As the floor pan and running gear can be used without the body being attached, they became a firm favourite of the kit car builders. They were turned into Porsche 356 replicas, beach buggies, and Nova kit cars to mention just a few.

Bruce re- designed the body to fit on a VW shortened floor pan and as a result, the Meyers Manx started the off-road revolution by building 5,280 Manx kits and several hundred Manx II's - a total of nearly 6,000 Manx kits.  The first Buggies to be seen in Britain were Manx imports. One of the first people to catch on an actually start building their own buggy was GP Mouldings, who soon ran into a design copyright battle with Mr Manx himself and won. The GP remained the staple diet of buggy heads throughout the Sixties and Seventies.

Pinewood Studios had two 1970 Volkswagen Beach Buggy saloons made from GP super buggy for the 1981 James Bond film 'For Your Eyes Only'. In the Beach Buggy world, one name reigns supreme - the Meyers Manx.... Manx Buggies are highly sought after and can command frightening prices.

The introduction of a long wheelbase version and a MK 2 was the beginning of the UK`s own input into design and development, with moulded windscreen frames and integrated side panels. Once a few kits got into the hands of Perfectionist Show Car builders in the early seventies the scene exploded with buggies featuring regularly in VW shows and events.  The Beach Buggy is a much saught after and still used worldwide.  There are already several in Singapore.
